A good admissions counselor can help you sort through all of the college information you are receiving to determine if their college is right for you. Remember, the college admissions advisor's responsibility is to help you pick their college. As you are on your search to find the right college you are looking for what is best for you. This means an outside college admissions consultant or advisor may be more resourceful. This person is not employed by one school, they act independently, therefore they will be more concerned with finding the right college for you.
